A new study shows that treatment outcomes are better when people with sleep apnea receive medical care from sleep experts.

The study took place at four sleep centers. Two were accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. A total of 502 people were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Treatment outcomes were compared after three months of PAP therapy.

Results show that people who received care from board certified sleep medicine physicians and accredited sleep centers were two times more likely to stick with the treatment. Accredited centers provided more timely care. People also were more satisfied with the care provided by sleep doctors.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious sleep illness that affects millions of people in the U.S. It increases the risk of high blood pressure, cardiac death, stroke and depression. A common warning sign of sleep apnea is loud and frequent snoring.

Sleep apnea can be treated effectively with CPAP therapy. Wearing a CPAP mask at night normalizes breathing and reduces health risks related to sleep apnea.
