A recent highway accident in New Jersey brought national attention to the dangers of drowsy driving. One person was killed and four others were injured in the crash. Comedian Tracy Morgan was one of the victims who was hurt in the drowsy driving collision. The National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project warns that such accidents are a pervasive threat to public health and safety.

Data show that drowsy driving causes more than 100,000 motor vehicle accidents on U.S. roads each year. Many of these accidents are deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that drowsy driving may be a factor in as many as 7,500 fatal crashes annually.

The Healthy Sleep Project urges every driver to keep our roads safe by staying “Awake at the Wheel”:
• Make it a daily priority to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
• Refuse to drive when sleep-deprived.
• Recognize the signs of drowsiness.
• Pull off the road to a safe location when sleepy.

“Drowsiness is similar to alcohol in how it compromises driving ability,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson. He is president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a national spokesperson for the Healthy Sleep Project. “Drowsy driving is deadly, but it can be prevented.”

Today Watson is speaking at a highway safety forum. It was organized by the National Transportation Safety Board. Sleep and safety experts are discussing the importance of “Overcoming the Dangers of Drowsy Driving.”
